Andy Hazell: Excellent river swimming spot, not a massively wide river but it's possible to swim upstream for a mile to the next weir and back. Beyond the next weir the fishermen can get irate and the river narrows anyway.
Can be busy on summer weekends, especially if the weather is good. Has a long history of public use as a bathing spot. If the locals or fisherman try and tell you it's full of sewage don't listen, this is a clean river and is one of the best rivers for sea trout in southern England. Check out the The Ouse and Adur Valley River Project for up to date water quality info.
There have been problems here in the past and they have tried to prevent swimming and boating. The cause; noise, litter, unofficial camping, parties, nudity etc. Please behave responsibly (even if others aren't), take your litter home and don't use the back of the field as a toilet. It'd be nice if people can continue to use for another 100 years.
Can be a very strong current after heavy rain, which also significantly reduces the water temperature.
