River

Many know about Lady Falls (Sgwd Gwladus), the graceful column of water that plunges 10m into a wooded amphitheatre with a large plunge pool. But climb to the top of the falls and continue upstream (no real path) to find the imposing Einion Gam, over 21m high and rarely visited, with a vast, deep pool and sheer cliffs. It feels lost world. Best in the morning sun.

Entering Pontneddfechan from B4242, find woodland ‘waterfall woods’ through metal gate behind Angel Inn L (SA11 5NR, 01639 722013, parking opp). About halfway is a little canyon stretch for jumping and swimming (51.7639, -3.5978). Eventually arrive at a large junction pool below footbridges. Cross first bridge and bear L up the Afon Pyrddin to Lady Falls, ¼ mile. (Bear R to continue to Horseshoe and then Ddwli falls, see listing). To continue to Einion Gam, bear up R above falls, and follow river for ½ mile. Also accessible from the N, at Bronwydd, end of road by SA11 5UR. 30 mins, 51.7714, -3.6011
