A lovely tarn nestling amongst trees and gently rolling hilltops near the South end of Lake Windermere. High Dam is a fairly large tarn (approx 300m by 200m) with lots of areas to get in, some rocks to jump off, hidden bays filled with lilies, and a couple of nice islands.

It is not particularly deep and is sheltered from the wind, so it doesn't get as cold as some tarns. A great place for a quick dip or a whole day spent lounging around, but it's also popular with walkers so skinny-dipping needs to be done with discretion.

Beautiful spot. Swam July, no need for wetsuit.

Lovely peaty freshwater, sheltered and balmy; indeed warm at the moment!

Easy to get in once at the dam, but a steep rough walk to the dam. However it is well worth the effort. Took my 9 year old who loved it and the swans didn't mind us sharing the water!

Risk of going down rocky shute if you go too near the exit weir

Had a lovely hour at High Dam in May 2019. Short walk to the tarn, not too strenuous. Good circular walk around and some good entrance points. Enjoyed the relative peace of the area with a Cuckoo calling and herons flying overhead.
